JUNE 1st 2013: Tommy Ashby and Electric Penelope for Village Week

St Boswells Live! is very excited to be hosting the opening evening of St Boswells Village Week. This 9-day extravaganza of events and activities is known throughout the Borders and attracts people from even further to take part and enjoy the best of St Boswells at the start of the Summer. True to form, we have pulled out all the stops to bring you a truly engaging and entertaining show to kick the week off.

Tommy Ashby

We are delighted that the multi-talented Tommy Ashby has come back up from London to his native Borders, to perform a solo set for us. Last heard, to huge acclaim at St Boswells in October last year, Tommy is about embark on a tour with Scottish chanteuse Nina Nesbitt, having been recognised for his amazing guitar playing and beautiful vocals. His solo work is second to none, whether with acoustic or electric guitar, or even mandolin, and we love hearing him play. There may even be a guest or two on the night.

Tommy Ashby – Waiting For The Fall (recorded at St Boswells Live!)

electric penelope

Electric Penelope comprise Berwick-Upon-Tweed based Anna Emmins, a truly extraordinary singer and songwriter, plus a superb band of musicians, all of whom are performers in their own right. Electric Penelope has just released an album of sumptuous songs which she will be showcasing, along with some belting covers on the night.

Electric Penelope – Carry Me Home

To start off the evening will be local musician Alan Oliver, who will be performing a mix of hand-penned and cover songs which we guarantee will get us off to a toe-tapping, hand-clapping start.

Doors open at 7.30, on Saturday 1st June, St Boswells Village Hall. We’ll also lay on candles, nibbles and lovely atmosphere.

Ticket prices: £10 full / £5 under-16 / £25 family of up to 5, at St Boswells Post Office or on the door (subject to availability).

Buy online tickets at a £1 discount for adults, including booking fee! (sorry, no family tickets online):

Plug and Play – Cancelled

It is with regret that we have had to cancel the Plug and Play conpetition, due to a lack of entrants.

It would have been unfair to go ahead with so few acts on the bill; however, those acts who did respond will all be offered an opportunity to play at St Boswells Live! in the future.

The next event will be the Village Week St Boswells Live! on Saturday 1st June, 2013.

23rd FEBRUARY 2013: A Jazz Evening featuring The Alex Yellowlees Hot Club Quartet

Jazz Evening Poster

A new year, a (slightly) new St Boswells Live! We are now running the club every other month, switching to Saturdays to make it easier for people to come along and enjoy the fabulous evenings we have planned for 2013. The first show of the year reflects the musical diversity of St Boswells Live! Jazz is a hugely diverse genre of music in itself from Trad. Jazz to Hot Club, Smooth Jazz to Avant Garde, and crossing over into blues, pop and even hip-hop.

One of the finest exponents of jazz in Scotland is Alex Yellowlees, Scotland’s premier jazz violinist, who has dazzled and entertained audiences throughout Europe with his original realisation of the ‘Hot Club’ style. Ever the pioneer, Alex has sculpted his own musical voice over a lifetime of performance and recordings, drawing from his extensive experience of celtic, blues and jazz genres.

On Saturday 23rd February, Alex will be joined by the rest of his quartet: virtuoso guitarist Mike Nisbet, composer and contemporary guitarist Ged Brockie, and multi-credited bass player Kenny Ellis. We have no doubt you will be stunned by their musicianship and sheer good-times performance of a vast range of jazz and popular standards and original compositions.

Supporting the band will be all sorts of guests, ranging from the local rising talents of the Earlston High School jazz band, brilliant Borders saxophone virtuoso Mike Haywood, and even a few old-stompers from the St Boswells Live! team [less of the “old”!]

Doors open at 7.30pm, with the music starting at 8pm. Bring your own drinks; we’ll lay on a few nibbles and a lovely atmosphere. If you play a bit of jazz and would like to go on stage, then please contact Keith on 01835 822692, or keith@stboswellslive.com.

Tickets are priced £8, with concessions for under-16s (£4) and families of up to 2 adults and 3 under 16s (£20). You can buy them from St Boswells Post Office, or online at WeGotTickets (link below).

Frightened Rabbit: What Can We Say?

I think you had to have been there…

Huge thanks to the immense Scott, Grant and Billy of Frightened Rabbit for everything they did; to Madeleine Dow for being a wonderful support act; to our brave Open Mics; to everyone who helped before and on the night; to our audience for being there; and to you for continuing to support St Boswells Live!

30th NOVEMBER 2012: Paul Liddell plus The Jellyman’s Daughter

On Friday November 30th, we will be showcasing a couple of young acts who’s musicality and talent will blow you away. We are really excited to be able to put on a show like this!

Paul Liddell is a working musician/singer/songwriter/recording artist based by the sea in the North East of England. Live, his singularly unique voice and unpretentious delivery combine with the use of live sampling, guitar percussion and layered vocal harmonies to provide a great platform for his wonderful songs to shine.

“Liddell’s guitar playing is extraordinary throughout this set as he employs percussive, hammer-on, slide, and a wide array of finger-picking techniques most reminiscent of Lindsay Buckingham — a master of melding pop melodies and flash. This record has the potential to break Liddell into the mainstream — that is, if the masses can turn off American Idol, X-Factor or The Voice and pay attention to a bona-fide, honest artist!” – Minor 7th Magazine

Supporting Paul are The Jellyman’s Daughter. Graham Coe (‘cello, guitar & vocals) and Emily Kelly (guitar & vocals) are classically trained musicians who have earned their spurs busking in Edinburgh and writing innovative and moving songs. Definitely a “listen and love” duo.

Doors open at 7.30 – tickets available via the link below (discounted) or at St Boswells Post Office. Open mic slots available on request by calling 01835 822692.

Tickets: £8 / £4 (under 16) / £20 (family of 5)**

26th OCTOBER 2012: Kathy Stewart plus Tommy Ashby

Friend of St Boswells Live! Kathy Stewart and her brilliant band The Frequent Flyers are making a much-demanded return visit for our October 26th double bill. Last year she stunned the audience with her beautiful vocals and moving songs along with the brilliant musicianship of the band.

New York singer-songwriter Kathy Stewart has been delighting audiences on this side of the Atlantic with her thought-provoking and exciting style of Country-based music for many years.

Kathy’s song writing draws on many influences of American popular culture and other spectrums, resulting in her own distinctive sound. She has been sought after for her composing and arranging abilities and is well known for her harmony work on recordings by established artists such as Andy M. Stewart, Silly Wizard, Dick Gaughan, Davy Steele, The John Wright Band, and British Country artists, John Hinshelwood and John Miller.

The Frequent Flyers combines the talents of Kathy Stewart on vocals and guitar, Ken Kennedy on double bass, harmonica and vocals, and lead guitarist, Big Al Rae. Both Ken and Big Al currently play in the Peebles-based “Red Clay Dirt Band”. In addition to the trio, specially for this show will be guests on pedal steel and mandolin, ensuring a huge sound.

Hailing from Innerleithen, local lad Tommy Ashby is continually gaining momentum as a songwriter and live act on the London music scene. Tommy’s rural roots are clear in his songs, with folk and blues stylings seamlessly integrated with pop songwriting to create skilfully crafted, warming and beautiful songs. What really shines through Tommy’s music is how natural the songs are; they are idiosyncratic to his voice, guitar playing and personality, and this makes for an absorbing live show.

Tommy is supported by a group of extremely talented musicians who are integral to creating the tight, vibrant sound. His new single, ‘Broken Bones’, can be downloaded for free at http://tommyashby.bandcamp.com/

Tickets available online or at St Boswells Post Office: £10 / £5 (under 16) / £25 (family of 5, Post Office only)
